Parthenon

Over 200 years ago Lord Elgin tore sections off the Acropolis in Athens hoping to use the Marbles to decorate his house. Far exceeding the dubious permissions granted to him by the Ottomans, and abusing his position as ambassador, his disastrous misadventure bankrupted him and he was forced to sell the Marbles to Parliament who donated them to the British Museum.

On taking up his Greek citizenship George joined the British Committee for the Reunification of the Parthenon Marbles, where he now helps drive campaigning actions in support of reunification.

Early campaign work began with a series of Freedom of Information requests revealing that the Museum holds over 100,000 Greek artefacts of which only some 6,000 are even exhibited - this shortly before the recent scandal broke in which news of thefts from this vast collection emerged.

More recently, working with friends and fellow committee members Avgoustinos Galliassos & Marlen Godwin, George led a successful Crowdfunding campaing which raised £35,000 with which BCRPM sought to symbolically repay Parliament the funds used to acquire the Marbles from Elgin.

The campaign is very much ongoing.
